Pebalap asal Malaysia Hafizh Syahrin telah resmi mencapai kesepakatan dengan Monster Yamaha Tech 3 untuk musim balap MotoGP 2018.
Syahrin, 23 tahun, resmi menjadi pebalap Tech3, menggantikan Jonas Folger (Jerman) yang mengundurkan diri karena terkena penyakit sindrom gilbert.
Bos Tech3, Herve Poncharal, mengatakan Syahrin adalah solusi terbaik yang dimiliki timnya untuk menggantikan Folger.
“Kami harus meyakinkan semua orang di sekitar kami bahwa Syahrin akan menjadi pebalap MotoGP yang baik,” ujar Poncharal yang dikutip BolaSport.com dari Autosport.com.
“Oleh karena itu, kami memberinya tugas berat selama tiga hari tes di Buriram. Pada akhirnya, dia melakukan pekerjaan yang luar biasa dan memenuhi misinya,” tutur dia.
Di Tech3, Syahrin tergabung satu tim dengan pebalap asal Perancis yang tampil mengejutkan pada musim lalu, Johann Zarco.
Sebagai pebalap motor, Syahrin memiliki pengalaman berkompetisi pada ajang Moto2 dalam kurun waktu 2011-2017.
Pencapaian terbaik Syahrin adalah menempati posisi kesembilan pada klasemen akhir Moto2 2016.
Adapun pada tahun lalu, Syahrin berada di posisi ke-10 dengan koleksi 106 poin.
Pada hari ketiga tes pramusim MotoGP 2018 di Sirkuit Buriram, Thailand, Syahrin mencatatkan waktu putaran 1 menit 31,537 detik, atau lebih cepat 1,6 detik dari hari pertama.
“Yamaha dan semua orang di Tech3 senang dengan performa Syahrin,” kata Poncharal.
“Saya sangat bangga memberikannya kesempatan dan saya tahu ini akan menjadi sesuatu yang bersejarah karena dia adalah pebalap pertama Malaysia yang membalap penuh pada MotoGP,” ujar dia.
Jelang MotoGP 2018, Hafizh Syahrin dan para pebalap lainnya masih akan menjalani tes pramusim terakhir di Sirkuit Losail, Qatar, pada 1-3 Maret mendatang.
