Keputusan Pickford meneken kontrak baru ini sekaligus menegaskan komitmennya bersama The Toffes. Kiper nomor satu timnas Inggris tersebut mulai menjadi pemain Everton pada musim 2017/18 yang lalu.
Melihat penampilan apiknya pada Piala Dunia 2018, Chelsea disebut sempat punya keinginan membeli Pickford. Sebab, pada bursa transfer musim panas 2018 ini, The Blues harus kehilangan kiper nomor satunya Thibaut Courtois.
Komitmen di Everton
Setelah melepas Courtois ke Real Madrid, Chelsea memang dikaitkan dengan beberapa nama. Salah satunya adalah Pickford. Tapi, Pickford tidak berminat pindah dan akhirnya The Blues menjatuhkan pilihan pada Kepa dari Atheltic Bilbao.
“Saya tahu bahwa saya punya kontrak dengan Everton dan saya tidak pernah memikirkan itu [ketertarikan dari Chelsea]. Spekulasi itu sama sekali tidak mempengaruhi saya,” ucap Pickford.
“Saya hanya tetap rendah hati dan fokus pada permainan saya, itulah yang saya lakukan [pasca Piala Dunia]. Anda harus melupakan hal tersebut,” sambung kiper Inggris paling mahal tersebut.
Pilih ke Sunderland
Pickford mengaku tidak pernah menyesali keputusan pindah ke Everton. Penjaga gawang berusia 24 tahun justru mengaku sangat senang. Sebab, dia mampu mengalami lonjakan karir yang cepat dan kini juga jadi kiper nomor satu Inggris.
“Jika saya tidak pindah ke Everton, saya akan memilih tetap bertahan di Sunderland yang merupakan klub kampung halaman saya. Sekarang saya ingin lebih baik untuk klub dan juga untuk timnas Inggris,” tandas Pickford.
