Kontes Slam Sunk menjadi puncak NBA All-Star di hari Sabtu (17/2/2018) waktu setempat. Rookie Utah Jazz Donovan Mitchell merebut predikat sebagai ‘Raja Dunk’.
Dalam rangkaian NBA All-Star yang digelar di Staples Center, Los Angeles, Sabtu (17/2/20`8) waktu setempat, Mitchell mengungguli power forward Cleveland Cavaliers Larry Nance Jr. Mitchell mengumpulkan total 98 poin dari dua kali dunk di putaran final, unggul dua poin dari Nance.
Dennis Smith Jr. (Dallas Mavericks) dan Victor Oladipo (Indiana Pacers) sudah tereliminasi di putaran pertama. Mitchell sendiri sebenarnya merupakan peserta pengganti setelah forward Orlando Magic Aaron Gordon mundur karena cedera.
“Saya sangat ingin menginginkan ini. Ini adalah salah satu event tervaforit saya di All-Star Weekend saat masih kecil. Ada di sini, kemudian menang, itu luar biasa. Sangat menyenangkan,” Mitchell mengatakan seperti dikutip Reuters.
Sejak putaran awal, Mitchell cukup konsisten dan nyaris tak pernah gagal dalam melakukan dunk. Pemain berusia 21 tahun itu mengawali aksinya dengan memanfaatkan papan ring lain untuk memantulkan bola dan kemudian menuntaskannya dengan dunk dengan satu tangannya.
Mitchell yang kemudian tampil dengan jersey klasik milik peserta kontes dunk 1984 Darrel Griffith mengajak komedian Kevin Hart untuk ambil bagian dalam aksi berikutnya. Kali ini dia melompati Kevin Hart dan putranya sebelum melakukan dunk.
Di putaran final melawan Nance, Mitchell memulai dengan sebuah dunk keras yang membuatnya dapat poin 50. Mitchell kemudian berganti jersey lagi di kesempatan kedua, kali ini dengan memakai seragam Toronto Raptors milik Vince Carter.
Dia memutar badannya di udara nyaris 360 derajat sebelum melakukan dunk. Berkat dunk itu, Mitchell mendapat 48 poin untuk mengungguli Nance dan jadi juara.
